Old House on Folsom Gets Colorful New Mural

New Mural

There’s an old house on Folsom near Ripley that just completed a lovely new mural on the facade. The owner of the place is young(ish), but he’s no arriviste — during a quick chat with Bernalwood, he told us he actually grew up in this house.

Here is the proud homeowner, his dog, and his new mural. They look pretty sweet together, don’t you think?

I was hoping the flower petals would get filled in with color.

    • Brent says:

I think the lack of color on the petals keeps the mural calm enough to be lovely and not too loud. It is a calm, peaceful color palette!

Oh, that is beautiful! I really hope it doesn’t tagged.

  3. Janna Cordeiro says:

Wasn’t this place in horrible disrepair for sometime before it was renovated/muralized? What is the backstory there? Maybe I’m thinking of the wrong house though.

    • Nina says:

Yes, but I don’t know the backstory. It sat vacant and “under construction” for years. At least, I think it was vacant. It looks a lot better now, but still, I am not a huge fan of the mural. I see why people like it, I just don’t. The line quality isn’t that great. The shades of green are a bit odd and dated. The composition is nice, though. How will it hold up to the weather? How will it be maintained? We shall see…

This would really be a good direction for the library mural I think. Nature, geometry and harmony.

  13. Jim Gleeson says:

Dude your house looks great! I remember when you were thinking of painting it and asked me what I suggested. I’m glad I didn’t interfere. What your artist produced is excellent. The colors and subject work well with the surrounding homes and add another artistic element to our hood! Thanks for enhancing the neighborhood Jim Gleeson

  14. friscolex says:

Stunning! I have a similar shade in my bedroom (East of Eden and Little Green Frog from Kelly-Moore). Love it.

Is that trompe l’oeil detailing around the windows? Awesome!

  15. michelle says:

Beautiful! We saw this in progress on a trek up Folsom one Sunday afternoon. Just gorgeous!

  16. Eileen says:

I love this! I live in Chile and the houses are almost never colorful, so I love my visits to SF, always visually stunning. I was with Michelle (above) and we gave the painter a huge thumb’s up on his work. Are they meant to be chrysanthemums?

  17. Orlando says:

Thanks Jim. Just my way of giving back to a neighborhood that we all hold dear to our hearts(I know you are one of the few OG’s left in Bernal).

  18. Mason says:

When a mural works this well with the scale, form, and thematic opportunities of the underlying architecture I’m left speechless. Great work.

  19. Rusty says:

It’s nice to get a break to the “precita eyes” style murals everywhere around here. I would love to see more diversity in murals like this. Maybe the owners of the opening in the future Precita Park Cafe might consider something like this as well.
